* A bag or basket to keep everything in.
* A small pair of scissors sharp enough to cut yarn. Children's scissors work well for this, as they are small, and the rounded tips don't tend to poke through things in your bag.
* A tape measure. MANY knitting patterns are based on measurements. Having a tape handy is priceless.
* A small notebook and pen or pencil. Having a place to make notes is invaluable.
* A needle gauge is very helpful. This is a tool with holes that you put your knitting needles in to determine what size they are. They are found easily and cheaply at any craft store or store with knitting needles, usually.
* Stitch holders can be helpful, but aren't a necessity You can always put your stitches on extra yarn, but it can be easier to get them back off of stitch holders.
* A tapestry needle is good for sewing projects together or weaving in ends.
* A small crochet hook or two (I carry size D and F) can be handy for picking up dropped stitches, and weaving in ends as well.
* Stitch markers are handy for many patterns. Again, you can also make these yourself from twist ties or looped yarn, but when you are serious about knitting, it is nice to have some that are just ready to go when you need them. And sometimes the pretty ones just make you happy!
* Some type of bag or organizer to store your notions in is also nice.
